Our Horses

The following horses are currently available for adoption! If you are interested in a particular horse, please contact the person specified in the horse's description to arrange a visit or get more information.

Please note that we often have horses in the program who may not be up on the web site yet. If you want to adopt a Thoroughbred but don't see a horse on this page that interests you, please contact us to ask about other horses in the program who are ready for adoption!

Thoroughbreds can become a rewarding and successful partner for your equine endeavors and give you great happiness. A Thoroughbred is not for everyone, and if you are considering adopting one, it is important to understand them. Please read the section on Adopting a Thoroughbred to find out if a Thoroughbred is the right kind of horse for you! We also ask that all potential adopters understand New Stride's adoption process.

Adopting a Thoroughbred

An ex-racehorse isn't for everyone. But if you have honestly analyzed what you want, what your abilities are, and your expectations are in riding, you may conclude that New Stride's horses are right for you. Thoroughbreds can become a rewarding and successful partner for your equine endeavors and give you great happiness. A thoroughbred is not for everyone, and if you are considering adopting one, it is important to understand them. These horses are athletic, intelligent, and versatile. Off-track Thoroughbreds are generally not recommended for green riders, as this combination will likely learn mistakes from each other rather than learning what's right. Thoroughbreds are sensitive animals; sensitivity makes them wonderful to ride but can also be a disaster in the wrong hands.
New Stride horses are donated to the foundation from owners at the racetrack. The horses are given some downtime, to get back to normal before they are available for adoption. New Stride's adoption program has a two-year contract with the new adoptive home. There is a thirty-day money back guarantee if the horse does not work out for the new owner. There are three horse check-ups the first year and two the following year. New Stride offer support and information on feeding and the care of Thoroughbreds.
This is an excellent article on what to expect from an off-track Thoroughbred: "How to Handle and Care for an Off-Track Thoroughbred".

Adoption Process

After meeting the people involved in the adoption, we decide the suitability of the horse to the owner. Our top priority is that the horse and the owner match. We perform farm inspections every 3 months during the first year and every 6 months during the second year. Our 2 year contract includes a 30 day money back guarantee if you don't like the horse. After 30 days, there is no refund, but we will still accept the horse back into our program. Potential adopters from outside the BC Lower Mainland must provide photographs of the facility where the horse will be stabled and a vet reference. Owners must also notify us of any change in address or stabling location within the 2 year contract period.

New Stride reserves the right to refuse any adoption if they think the combination is not a good fit. Horses found to be in delinquent condition will be repossessed.
