Enter the Adoption Program
Owners and trainers may approach New Stride with horses they wish to place in the program. Horses are assessed by an Intake Committee for suitability and presented to the Board of Directors for consideration and acceptance into the program or onto a wait list. Horses are reviewed and considered on a first-come-first-served basis.
Eligibility:
- Horses must be Thoroughbreds that have raced or trained in British Columbia.
- The American Association of Equine Practitioners’ “Transitioning the Retired Racehorse: Guidelines for Equine Practitioners, Adoption Organizations and Horse Owners” will be followed by New Stride board members and volunteers involved with intake assessment and decision-making.
- Horses must be delivered directly from the track, from a training centre or from a farm where rehabilitation has been provided. Transportation to New Stride is the responsibility of the owner.
- Horses that have been away from the track for more than one year are not eligible.
- Off-track Thoroughbreds that have been used as broodmares or riding horses are not eligible.
- Stallions must be gelded.

Enter the Owner-Supported Adoption Program
New Stride created its Owner-Supported Program as a way of further assisting the Thoroughbred industry.
Owners whose horses are unable to enter the regular adoption stream may arrange to place their horses in New Stride’s care and pay the horse’s expenses until the horse is adopted. Owners maintain ownership of the horses for the entire period they are with New Stride.
Owners will benefit from New Stride’s expertise in retraining and adopting Thoroughbreds. Potential adopters will be screened in the same fashion as the horses in the regular adoption program. Successful adopters will sign an adoption contract and will be subject to follow-ups for a one-year period.
This option is great for Thoroughbred owners who want to ensure their horse goes to a good home but don’t have the time to do it themselves.
